SWAIA’s chosen poster artist for the August 2008 Indian Market painted “Cochiti Feast,” on our cover this month. Mateo Romero’s mixed-media painting was selected by Contributing Editor Joan Fenicle to represent our American Indian Arts theme for its wonderful use of color and subject matter.
“The SWAIA poster image is a powerful
portrayal of a deer dancer, but these children,
ready to dance, caught our eyes and our
hearts,” Fenicle says. “Romero represents the
new generation of American Indian artists,
who combine traditional elements of their
culture with contemporary expressions.”
